Egypt

Our first week of Geography, we learned about Egypt.  I got a ton of ideas from www.homeschoolcreations.com.  She loosely follows Galloping the Globe, and then adds in a lot of her own ideas.  I am pretty much doing a very scaled down version of what she has done. 

Monday – We found Egypt on the wall map, and then on our globe.  K and E danced around as we listened to the song about Northern Africa from Geography Songs.  We looked up Egypt in our children’s atlas, and then K colored a map of Egypt.  She colored the Sahara brown, the Nile River blue, and circled the capital city, Cairo, red.  We then read some of the books that are listed down at the bottom of this post.  They also watched Little Einsteins and the Golden Pyramid. 

Tuesday – We looked through Egypt, Enchantment of the World, which had a lot of pictures of Egypt’s geographical features.  We then learned more about rivers, deltas, and deserts in Geography from A To Z. 

Thursday – We started our geography lesson by listening to the Northern Africa song again.  We then focused on the landmarks of Egypt: pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Aswan High Dam.  After talking about and looking at pictures of the many famous landmarks in Egypt, K did a little worksheet in a World Countries book I found in the $1 section at Target.  To finish the day, we read the Egyptian story in Around the World in 80 Tales.  Love this book so far!

Friday -  K colored the Egyptian flag, and we learned why they chose the colors black, white and red.  I bought passports and world flag stickers from Rainbow Resource, and K put the Egyptian flag in her passport.  She then colored in Egypt on our black and white map, which I bought at Lakeshore.  It’s a laminated world map about the size of a placemat, and can be wiped clean if you use dry erase markers.
