Last week our theme was Pets. Both K and E love animals, so they were very excited to learn more about them. On our first day, we read Dear Zoo (a favorite around here), Dogs and Fritz's Fish. We talked about why some animals make good pets and why some do not. We couldn't agree on a couple of animals, since my kids seem to think we should build a barn in our backyard so we can accommodate a horse and a sheep. We then watched Hooked on Pets, which is an activity kit by Hooked on Phonics.
On day 2, we read Cats, How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs, and Pet Shop Lullaby. For our art project, I had them color and cut out two fish each, and then glue them onto a piece of blue construction paper. Then they added seaweed around the fish with crayons and markers. I had also planned to make our own pet store by displaying a bunch of stuffed animals and getting out our play cash register, but we had a couple of sick days this week and didn't get to it. I think they would have had so much fun with it, so maybe this week sometime. I also had planned to take them to a pet store, but we didn't get to that either.
