Week 3

August 2 - 6

I can't believe we are done with week 3 already. So far everything I had planned is getting done and K is enjoying everything, well maybe not reading. She thinks since she can read some words that she should be done learning to read. I think I finally convinced her that she needs to keep going since there are so many more words out there.

Math - Finished Unit 12 in Singapore, and will be starting number bonds next. I'm curious how this will go, but I think she will get it.  I have never taught this before, so hopefully I will explain it well.

Language Arts - We kept moving through Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading (4 lessons/week).   Even though K is somewhat resistant to her reading lessons, she has not struggled with new material.  She is retaining everything, so even though she doesn't care for OPG we will keep with it for now.  She did 5 or 6 more pages in Explode the Code 1, and did the Ss pages in Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K.

Geography - This week we learned about Morocco.  We read My Father's Shop and looked up Morocco in our atlas, colored a map and Morocco's flag, looked at pictures and watched a video on http://www.morocco-travel.com/morocco/AboutMorocco/index.html, stamped her passport, and colored in Morocco on our black and white map.

Science - We continued learning about weather this week, and finished the Usborne Weather book.  Sonlight Science K is a really good fit for K.  She likes worksheets and so far the subjects covered have been things she is interested in.  I hope to be able to utilize the experiments section of the curriculum soon.  That dvd that shows all of the experiments just makes it too easy not to do them yourself!  (In case you are not familiar with Sonlight science programs, they come with a dvd that shows all the experiments being done.  It is pretty cheesy, but K loves it!)

Theme - This was dinosaur week.  I will be writing a post about this later in the week once I have my pictures on the computer.

Read Alouds - Continued the reading schedule I put together from Sonlight P3/4 and P4/5.

One of the extra things that K is doing is a workbook called Developing the Early LearnerSonlight includes the set (4 books) with their Core P4/5, I believe.  I was interested in them, but they are around $40 from Sonlight and $30 from Amazon, and I wasn't sure if they would be worth it.  I ended up with books 2 - 4, because I found them for $4 at a used curriculum sale this summer.  I love used curriculum sales!  Anyway, we started book 2 this past week, and so far I like it.  Each page works on either motor, auditory, visual or comprehension skills.  Anything to help with her listening skills is worth a try!  I'm still not sure if I would have thought it was worth $30 to $40 dollars, but you can't beat $4.

  1. Wow! what a great find. I never used the early learner books, but I sure would have for that price!
