The kids loved dinosaur week, but I did get tired of all of the roaring that came with it. I already have to tell my daughter many teams each week to stop making pteranodon noises (she loves Dinosaur Train on PBS). Twice a week we do read alouds and projects that go along with our theme, but nothing too intense since this is mostly geared toward my two year old.
On the first day we read How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food, and Dinosaur Bob. Dinosaur Bob was a little too long for E, but he really liked the other two. For our project we made dinosaur puppets. I gave one of them a stegosaurus and the other a tyrannosaurus rex, and then they colored them and cut them out. I had them glue them onto some card stock and then tape a popsicle stick to the back. K made up a story for them to act out and I got to watch a little dinosaur puppet play!
On the second day we read How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon, Tyrannosaurus Math and Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs. We watched a little PowerPoint presentation that I threw together showing pictures of a bunch of different dinosaurs. Then we got out our tape measure so that we could figure out how big some of these dinosaurs were. We measured the sizes of an ankylosaurus, stegosaurus, tyrannosaurus and brontosaurus. The brontosaurus was 70 feet, which was from our back door to the sidewalk in front of our house! After our measuring, I let them watch a Sesame Street: Dinosaurs dvd that we had found at the library, while they had a dinosaur snack. I found this idea in a Mailbox magazine, and it was called Dinosaur Dig. You put cereal in a cup with a dinosaur gummy candy hiding in there somewhere, and they get to find it while they eat. They were both very excited when they found their dinosaurs! (They didn't have gummy dinosaurs at Target, but they did have Toy Story fruit snacks which had a dinosaur.)
To finish up dinosaur week, we went to check out some dinosaurs at the natural history museum.
What a neat week! And how fun for the children!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I'm in the process of doing a dinosaur unit myself.
ReplyDeleteI am a former teacher turned stay-at-home mom of a 6-month old and I've never really considered homeschooling, but OH. MY. I want to go to your homeschool! I love dinosaurs and this post brought back so many happy learning memories from my own childhood! Honestly, this post makes me want to homeschool! (I found your link on Homeschool Creations.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing about your dinosaur week!
