Colors & Shapes

Tot School

This week our theme was colors and shapes. I didn't figure on my just turned 2 year old to actually learn these this week, so I put colors and shapes together (originally I had planned to do one week on each) and we just had fun. He really surprised me though.  I had no idea how many colors he already knew.  I have posters from Lakeshore with colors and shapes up on the wall, so we started each day going over those. Then we did a project or played a game.

Games
The first game we played was a color game. I cut out 10 different colored construction paper stars, and then I placed them on the ground all around the room. Then I would call out a color and they had to find it. If I was doing this with kids who were the same age, I probably would call out the color and let them go for it. Since my daughter is so much older I had them take turns, so that she didn't get every star. This is when E surprised me with his color knowledge!  When I called out yellow, orange, white, brown and blue he headed straight for the right star.  He didn't know pink, red, purple, green or black, but after playing the game a few times he seemed to know those as well.  :)

The next game was a really simple shape game. I gave one of them a square and the other a circle. I called out different shapes and when I said their shape, they had to hold it up in the air.

Art
Our shape art project was outlining and decorating a triangle. I printed large triangles on 8.5 x 11 pieces of paper, and handed them the art supplies. They colored them with crayons and colored pencils, and then outlined them with pom poms.

For our colors art project we made sun catchers.  They made a design on wax paper with crayon shavings and then I put another piece of wax paper on top and ironed it.  Then we glued popsicle sticks around the outsides and taped some ribbon on the back.  I remember doing these when I was a kid, so it was really fun to do with them.  They loved playing with the crayon shavings, and E ended up covered in them.  Luckily, they are easy to clean up!  I love the results...E says his is a horse, and K made a heart.  Can you tell?

Books
The books we read this week to go with our theme were...

Red Sings from Treetops by Joyce Sidman

Pa Grape's Shapes by Phil Vischer

Brown Bear Brown Bear  by Bill Martin, Jr.

Do Cows Turn Colors in the Fall? by Viki Woodworth
