K4 January

K turned 5 years old during our long Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years break!  I'm still going to be calling this year K4, so that next year can be her Kindergarten year.  The first week we started back slowly with math, science and a little phonics.  I had planned to jump right back in, but a stomach flu got in the way of that.  Things just seem to always pop up!  Anyway, by the end of January we seemed to be doing a little of everything that I had planned.  This is what K accomplished last month...

In math, K is learning about money and time, as well as learning her numbers from 10 to 20.  Abeka K5 math has been mostly review for her, but I figure it can't hurt to know the basics really well.  Pretty soon she will be getting into addition, which we had only touched on before.

I like to focus on language arts around here, but it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes a day and we only do 4 days per week.  Our line up is Hooked on Phonics for reading, Explode the Code for phonics, All About Spelling for spelling, and Abeka for handwriting.  K does handwriting and reading all four days, and then phonics and spelling every other day.   She is doing pretty well with reading, but it is still a bit of a challenge since she could take it or leave it.  I'm not really pushing it, so we are moving slowly.  She does great with phonics though, and reads everything in the ETC 2 book quite easily.   We just moved onto Step 6 in AAS, and she is reviewing how to write her letters properly in handwriting.

In Science, we are learning about the human body right now.  K seems to enjoy this much more than plants.  She loved learning about babies and how digestion works.  She did not seem to care too much about how our brains or heart worked.   And ever since we learned about muscles, she has had something that is sore.  One day it was her arm, and then for the last couple of days her legs have been sore.  :)

In Geography, we learned about Italy and Spain.  I'll write more about that later.

K also learned how to ride her bike without the training wheels this week!  My husband took her outside to teach her, and I couldn't believe how quick she picked it up.  She came back to get me 10 minutes later so that she could show me, and she was already riding around by herself.  She's growing up so fast!
