It was a busy weekend, so I'm posting this a little late. My goal for this blog is to have a summary of our school year, so I want to make sure I write about each week no matter how late it is. K is doing really well with pretty much everything. Reading could probably be coming along better, and of course I would like her to be more interested in reading by either providing better books for her or maybe by using incentives. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. I love reading, and according to my mom I always have. K doesn't seem to share this love so far, which makes me a little sad. I don't want to push her too much though, so we are taking it slow. This week I am going to be looking for or making my own monthly reading chart for her that I think will help a little.
Math
K did 5 lessons in
Singapore Earlybird B
this week. The lessons covered numbers 20 - 30, with some addition and subtraction review.
Language Arts
K started the e section in
Explode the Code 1
, and did 8 pages. She learned a few more phonograms for
All About Spelling Step 1. I have read so many reviews for All About Spelling where moms say that their kids just love this program. I thought they were probably exaggerating a little, but now I really believe them. I cannot explain it, but even though we are just starting and are still on the first lesson K gets excited to do her spelling work. I'm hoping this continues as we move on past the first step. K also read some
BOB books
and Hooked on Phonics readers.
Science
This week (Sonlight Science K week 10) K learned about animal classification in the
Usborne Childrens Encyclopedia
: mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and creepy-crawlies (that's what the book called them).
Geography
We had not done geography for a couple of weeks, but we started again on Friday. This is one of the only things we do on Friday, so I try to keep it pretty light and fun. This week we learned about Japan.
- K found Japan on our wall map
- Looked up Japan in the atlas, and I pointed out the capital and interesting geographical features (Japan is an island country, volcanoes)
- Looked at pictures in some library books about Japan, and read
The Boy of the Three Year Nap
- Read the story from Japan in
Around the World in 80 Tales
- K did the Japan page in a World Countries workbook
- Colored the Japanese flag
- Stamped her passport
- Colored in Japan on our black & white map
Theme
Farm Animals
Extras
K did 3 pages in
Developing the Early Learner 2
, and she did a project from Abeka Art Projects 1. Following directions has not been an easy task for K the last few weeks, and luckily all of our extras seemed to focus on improving listening skills. Developing the Early Learner focuses on listening and following directions. The art project was drawing a pig by following the teacher's step by step instructions. Hopefully, practicing will make her a better listener in other aspects of life. We'll see!
