K4 Weekly Review - Weeks 12 & 13

The last two weeks have gone really well!  K has really been enjoying the school work we've been doing, which makes me very happy since one of the main reasons I am homeschooling is that I want my children to actually enjoy learning.  Below is what she accomplished in the last two weeks...

Math
- 10 lessons in Singapore Earlybird Kindergarten Math B; learning numbers 1-30, telling time, days of the week, etc.

Language Arts
- 13 pages in Explode the Code 1; reviewing short vowel sounds
- Steps 2 and 3 in All About Spelling; she learned to fragment words and memorized all of the phonograms
- read Bob books
- practiced the letter V in Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K

Science
- Weeks 11 & 12 in Sonlight Science K; learned about mammals, birds and reptiles
- Finally did an experiment! Sonlight uses the Usborne Science Activities 2 for their experiments, so we did a couple in the Air section. We made paper airplanes that K and E both decorated. They then spent about an hour letting them fly from our second story loft down to our family room below. We also used a sheet of paper and a wadded up sheet of paper to show how some things travel through air better than others.  K stood on a chair and let both pieces of paper go at the same time.   We learned that the flat one is slower because it is a bigger shape, therefore more air can push against it.

Geography
We learned about South Korea and Russia, which finishes up our study of Asia.
For every country that we learn about we...

1. find the country on our wall map
2. find the country in our atlas, and I just go over anything interesting about the landscape and point out landmarks
3. read at least one story from or about the country
4. read the story about the country from Around the World in 80 Tales
5. color the country's flag (I usually use the flag printables from Homeschool Creations, because Jolanthe also has the history of the flags on the page)
6. put a sticker of the country's flag in her passport, and she writes the date
7. color in the country on our black and white world map
8. watch a video clip on the computer, a movie or a Little Einstein episode that goes with the country (if available)

The books we read were South Korea: Enchantment of the World, Russia, The Gigantic Turnip, and Baboushka. K had just watched Anastasia for the first time a few weeks ago, so she was very interested in Russia. Another movie that takes place in Russia is Little Einsteins: Rocket's Firebird Rescue, which is the one K watched this week.

Extras
K did six pages in Developing the Early Learner 2, and did two drawings from Draw Write Now 2. We drew some apples that fell from a tree, and an owl sitting in a tree. I did both of these drawings with her, and she does just as well as I do. I don't know if that means that she is really good for her age, or if I draw like a 4 year old!  K also helped me make some corn bread muffins.  I try to have her cook with me at least once a week.  She loves to help in the kitchen!
