Week 8

September 7 - 10

This was a crazy week. I am not even sure how, but we managed to fit school in.  I can't believe this was our 8th week already. I remember the weeks leading up to our first day seemed to take a long time, but since July time has flown by. I'm not complaining since personally I could do without summer. This is what we managed to accomplish this week...

Math
K did lessons 15.2 to 15.5 in Singapore Earlybird Math B, which focused on subtraction.  Singapore has really grown on me in the last couple of weeks.  I really like how hands on this program is, and K is grasping the concepts quickly. I am very glad I bought both the text book and the activity book though. I think using just the textbook would not provide enough practice.

Language Arts
For phonics, K did a few pages in Explode the Code 1. We are about half way through the book, and are in the i section. She seems to really enjoy this book, and never complains about doing it. I guess she might be a workbook kind of kid.
For handwriting, she practiced uppercase and lowercase R in the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K book. We have stopped using a formal reading program for awhile, so she practiced her reading using BOB books.

Science
This week we read about ocean currents, waves, and the north and south poles in the Usborne Children's Encyclopedia. K was not too interested in any of this, so hopefully next weeks subjects will be something she likes. I'm disappointed that I haven't done too many experiments with her yet. We are using Sonlight Science K which provides experiments to do every week, and we have only actually done it twice. I guess that can be my goal for next week.

Geography
I kept geography pretty light this week. India was our country, and we started out by looking up India in our Children's World Atlas and finding the country on our wall map. We looked at pictures of India in a library book. We read the Indian story in Around the World in 80 Tales, and K colored the Indian flag. She finished up by stamping her passport, coloring in India on our black and white map, and watching Little Einsteins: Little Elephant's Big Parade. Next week we will be learning about Israel.

Theme
Bears

Other Stuff
K did a project from Abeka Art Projects 1. It was very similar to last weeks project, but she made a bear this time using different sized brown circles. She also did 3 pages in Developing the Early Learner 2.

My other goal for next week is to remember to take pictures!

  1. I feel ya on remembering to take pictures. I think my camera is glued to my hand most of the day but as soon as school starts it's a huge struggle to pick it up. School time is busy!

My Sierra is a workbook girl, too. I love it!

I didn't know Singapore was so hands on! I'll have to look into it.

  2. Sounds like you got quite a bit done! Does your camera have a neck strap? You could wear it. lol

Good luck on the coffee reduction....
